DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality
EQUITY AND EQUALITY:
“Accelerating Equality and Empowerment.”
“A Call for Digital Electronic Voting Nationally and Internationally” — Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies
On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2023, we at the United Nations Positive Livelihood Award Centre (UNTED NATIONS -POLAC) celebrates women’s achievements and contributions with a series of events and engagements – we look forward to your participation by the special grace of God Almighty.
The UN theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.” This theme is aligned with the priority theme for the upcoming 67th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW-67), “Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls” by the World Bank Group.
This theme aligns with the “Role of Females or Women in Politics” which was highlighted by Amb. Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies at the webinar, stressing that the women folk will find it easier to vote if there is electronic voting as DigitALL innovation and technology for gender equality is being proposed.
Adesanya-Davies, added, there is also the need to create FREE ZONES for only women to contest elections among themselves, such that the men will not have to contest the 35% allocated to the women folk in line with Millennium Goals.
This is because, women would prefer to contest among themselves only. it has been noted that, ‘When some women try to get involved in politics, they are despised and as such they are at the defensive. Even their co-women would despise them and refuse to support and vote for them.”
Again, “Women are not as financially buoyant as the men and the political environment and conditions are often unfriendly and hostile to women.” For instance, “The recent protest by hundreds of placard-carrying, concerned Nigerian women at the National Assembly, Abuja against the rejection of five bills seeking gender equality in Nigeria is not only justified but has passed a potent message to prick the conscience of the powers that be.”
According to the protesters,. “It was a clear denial of Nigerian women the golden opportunity of inclusion and representation in governance by voting against the bills that is supposed to be regulated.
However, in the past, we had the likes of Margaret Ekpo, Funmilayo Ransom-Kuti and Gambo Sawaba etc as exemplary women. Precisely, on 18th December 1979, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly.
It entered into force as an international treaty on 3rd September, 1981 after the twentieth country had ratified it. Incidentally, Nigeria is a signatory to this international agreement. But has it walked the talk? No!
For instance, according to Statistahttps://www.statista.com › website, from 1999-2003 there were 454 male legislators to 15 women. From 2003-2007 there were 445 male to 25 female lawmakers. Ditto from 2007-2011. It was 435 male to 34 female lawmakers, while from 2011-2015 there were 438 male to 31 female legislators. The current dispensation is no better as there are 440 male legislators to 29 female counterparts from 2019 till now.
We therefore call on the National Assembly to reconsider its stand, listen to the cries of our women and accede to the 35 percent Affirmative Action for female participation in politics. Women, has often highlighted as best in thinking and administration and are the vessels of life and therefore, should be seen as men’s partners in progress.
Gender equality and empowerment remains a priority to the UN-POLAC and would always be in our Positive Livelihood Award Centre. We presented our webinar titled: Equity and Equality to celebrate today’s International Women’s Day 2023, with the main theme: “Accelerating Equality and Empowerment” EQUITY means “The quality of being fair and impartial.” EQUALITY means “The state of being equal, especially in status, rights, or opportunities.”
