Scores of Christian worshippers from various denominations on Sunday took to the streets of Ilorin the Kwara state capital to observe Palm Sunday, a day for remembrance of the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem over 2,000 years ago.

The event also signaled the conclusion of the 40-day Lenten fast and the start of the Passion Week leading up to Easter.

In Ilorin, worshippers from various denominations gathered at Saint Barnabas Cathedral, Sabo-Oke, before embarking on a several-hour-long procession through major city routes, including Murtala Way, Maraba, Amilegbe, Ipata, Opo-Malu, Emir’s Road, Taiwo Isale, Unity, and the Post Office area.

A parallel group set out from First Baptist Church, Surulere, joining the main procession at Unity Road.

Addressing the faithful, the chairman of the Christian association of Nigeria (CAN), Kwara state chapter, Right Reverend Sunday Adewole, urged believers to remain steadfast in faith and service to God.

“Christians must continue to uphold their faith in these challenging times,” he said.

He also appealed to government and security agencies to prioritise the protection of lives and property, while highlighting the hardships facing citizens due to rising petroleum prices and erratic electricity supply.

Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, represented by his senior special assistant on Religious Matters, Reverend Timothy Oluwagbemiga Akangbe, encouraged worshippers to pray for the progress of Kwara state and the nation.

“As we reflect on this holy week, let us show kindness and remain committed to uplifting our communities,” the governor said.
