The Action Peoples Party (APP) has recorded a boost in its legislative strength following the defection of two serving members of the House of Representatives to the party.
NOP NIGERIA reports that the lawmakers, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere and Mathew Nwaogu, formally announced their exit from their former parties during plenary on Tuesday.
Ugochinyere, who was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Nwaogu, formerly of the Labour Party, conveyed their decisions through separate letters read on the floor of the House by the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen.
In their letters, both lawmakers cited internal crises within their respective parties as the primary reason for their defection.
They noted that the lingering issues had hampered effective participation in party activities and undermined their ability to adequately represent their constituents.
In a swift move to consolidate its growing presence in the National Assembly, the APP announced the appointment of Ugochinyere as the party’s House of Representatives Caucus Leader.
The National Chairman of the party, Uche Nnadi, who was present during plenary, formally received the lawmakers into the party.
He described their defection as a bold step towards strengthening democratic ideals and enhancing legislative effectiveness.
According to Nnadi, the APP remains committed to offering a credible platform for lawmakers focused on people-oriented governance.
The party leadership expressed confidence that the addition of the two lawmakers would significantly boost its influence within the National Assembly.
Nnadi emphasised that the APP would continue to welcome like-minded leaders across the country, as it works towards building a formidable political force anchored on accountability, service delivery, and national development.
