The screening process within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is gathering momentum as the party prepares for the 2027 elections, with aspirants for various offices undergoing vetting ahead of its primaries. Among those seeking elective positions is Ezekiel Dalhatu, an aspirant for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat, who used the opportunity to defend the party’s growing appeal and explain why many members believe it represents a fresh political direction.
Speaking during an interview with Arise News, Dalhatu addressed questions surrounding the emergence of Peter Obi as the lone presidential aspirant cleared by the party so far. He argued that Obi’s political stature and influence make him a natural rallying point for a young party still building its structure and identity.
According to him, NDC, which was only recently registered, requires a figure capable of attracting grassroots support and inspiring confidence among Nigerians. He described Obi as a politician with strong public appeal whose support base extends beyond party lines.
Dalhatu insisted that the lack of challengers for Obi should not be viewed as a crisis or evidence of a lack of internal democracy. Rather, he said members are making strategic choices based on what they believe can strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
Explaining why many politicians may be reluctant to join the presidential race within the party, he declared: “NDC is a party of serious minded people who really want to change the narrative and democracy in Nigeria.”
