The Nigeria Police Force has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against drug trafficking after officers attached to Zone 2 Command rejected a ₦500 million bribe and seized a large consignment of suspected Canadian Loud valued at about ₦7.8 billion in Lagos State.
The operation, which followed weeks of intelligence gathering and surveillance, reportedly led to the arrest of the prime suspect, identified as Eke Henry Ifeanyi, alongside the recovery of hundreds of bags of the suspected illicit substance.
According to police authorities, the raid was carried out in the Mende area of Maryland, Lagos, where operatives uncovered a warehouse allegedly used for storing and distributing the drugs. During the operation, officers reportedly recovered about 425 bags of the substance believed to be Canadian Loud, a strong strain of cannabis commonly trafficked illegally.
Speaking during a media briefing, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, AIG Olohundare Jimoh, said the suspect allegedly attempted to compromise the investigation by offering ₦500 million to the Special Protection Unit commander handling the case.
However, the officers rejected the bribe and proceeded with the operation, leading to the successful seizure of the drugs and other incriminating items.
Police sources revealed that several luxury vehicles, mobile phones, ATM cards, and documents were also recovered from the suspect during the raid. Investigators further discovered that the suspect allegedly used a business connected to POS paper rolls as a cover for the illegal drug operation.
Authorities described the seizure as one of the largest drug-related busts recorded in recent times within the command, adding that the recovered substances have an estimated street value of ₦7.8 billion.
The Nigeria Police Force praised the professionalism and integrity displayed by the officers involved in the operation, noting that rejecting such a massive bribe demonstrates the commitment of the force to tackling organized crime and drug trafficking across the country.
Meanwhile, investigations are still ongoing as security operatives intensify efforts to track down other suspected members of the drug syndicate believed to be connected to the operation.
The police also assured Nigerians that anyone linked to the illegal business would be brought to justice in accordance with the law.
