A young man was apprehended by residents in Port Harcourt after being caught in an alleged act of bestiality with a goat, leading to a confrontation with an angry mob.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred in the early hours in a residential area of the city. Residents who noticed unusual activity reportedly approached the scene and apprehended the suspect. A video circulating online shows the man surrounded by a crowd, with some individuals forcing him to kiss the goat before security operatives arrived.
Police in Rivers State have confirmed that they are aware of the incident and that the suspect was taken into custody to prevent further escalation. Authorities stated that investigations are ongoing and that the case will be handled according to the law. The goat was also secured by the owners.
Bestiality is a criminal offense under Section 214 of the Criminal Code Act applicable in Southern Nigeria, which classifies it as an unnatural offense punishable by imprisonment. Legal practitioners note that mob action against suspects is not recognized under Nigerian law and can itself lead to charges of assault, unlawful detention, and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.
Human rights groups have condemned both the alleged act and the mob’s response. They urged the public to hand over suspects to law enforcement rather than taking the law into their own hands.
“Vigilante justice undermines due process and can lead to miscarriages of justice,” said a Port Harcourt-based lawyer. “The right approach is to report the matter to the police and allow the courts to determine guilt or innocence.”
Mental health professionals note that cases involving bestiality often require psychological evaluation to determine underlying issues. They also caution against the spread of graphic videos and images online, citing provisions in the Cybercrimes Act that prohibit the distribution of obscene content….See More
