A man has sparked conversation online after sharing how he took back a ₦5,000 gift he initially intended for an elderly man who later rejected the amount.
The man explained that he had gone to greet an elderly man identified as Baba Adugbo, who asked him for money during their interaction.
According to the account, he opened his banking application to transfer ₦5,000, but due to network issues affecting the recipient’s bank, the transaction could not be completed. Instead, he arranged for a woman in the neighbourhood to deliver the cash on his behalf the following day.
Gift returned over amount
After receiving the money, the elderly man returned it, saying the amount was too small.
The intermediary later informed the sender that the money had been rejected and asked what should be done with it. The man responded that she should keep the cash temporarily while he provided his account details for a refund.
However, before the refund was processed, the elderly man allegedly sent someone to collect the money again.
The development prompted the intermediary to contact the sender once more to determine whether he still wanted the money returned or wished to release it to the elderly man.
Explaining why he requested the money back, the man wrote:
“But I won’t tolerate that kind of rubbish, especially when it’s money I worked hard for, and from someone who hasn’t done anything for me in his life.”
Advice from intermediary sparks debate
The man said the woman advised him to overlook the situation because the recipient was elderly.
According to him, she encouraged him to show respect and accept the man’s behaviour due to his age.
Despite the advice, he insisted on having the money refunded and immediately sent his account details.
He later claimed the elderly man was surprised after learning that the money had been returned to him instead.
