A special session of the European Parliament called to mark 1,000 days of war in Ukraine will feature a remote address by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the parliament’s head said on Tuesday.
EU parliament chief Roberta Metsola said Zelensky will join the plenary session on November 19 “for a special address from Ukraine” — as the 27-nation bloc seeks to cement its support for Kyiv following Donald Trump’s re-election as US president.
“For as long as it takes,” Metsola wrote on social media site X, adding emojis for the EU and Ukrainian flags in a post announcing the extraordinary parliamentary sitting that would “mark 1,000 days of the bravery and courage of the people of Ukraine”.
EU officials have been at pains to stress that Brussels will continue to back Ukraine regardless of any potential changes to Washington’s foreign policy.
Trump’s victory last week sparked fears of a reduced US commitment to European security and a curtailing of military support for Kyiv.
The EU opened accession negotiations with Kyiv in June, setting the war-torn country on a long path towards membership and members have provided Ukraine with more than $130 billion in military, humanitarian and financial aid since Russia’s 2022 invasion, according to the bloc.
