A cousin of Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, a British-Azeri DJ, has been arrested in a drug raid at a party near Athens, Greek police said Tuesday.
Police said they arrested thirteen people Monday at a luxury villa in the town of Kalyvia.
They gave no names but media reports said Izzat Khanim Javadova, known as Mikaela Jav, was among those held.
Asked about the reports, a police source, who refused to be identified by name, confirmed it was her, adding that she “organised the party”.
Javadova, who has a British passport, is the daughter of President Aliyev’s late uncle Jalal. Reports described her as a regular in Ibiza, the popular partying destination in Spain’s Balearic Islands.
The British and Azerbaijan embassies in Athens did not immediately reply to requests for comment.
According to a police statement, the party’s “organiser” — Javadova, according to the source — was “found in a bedroom” with 45 packages of cocaine, ecstasy and crystal meth, and a safe containing over 43,000 euros ($45,000).
Javadova and nine other people will appear before a magistrate on Thursday to face charges of illegal drug trafficking and use, the source added.
But three off-duty police officers providing security for the event, who were also arrested, will not be charged at present as the investigation is ongoing, the source said.
According to Britain’s National Crime Agency, Javadova and her husband Suleyman Javadov made a deal in 2021 to surrender £4 million deemed to be the illegal proceeds of an Azerbaijani money laundering scheme.
