Federal University Kashere, Akko local government,Gombe state,is facing a water crisis that has left students, particularly those living off-campus, in a difficult situation. The scarcity of water has become a daily struggle, affecting their health, hygiene, and overall well-being.
Students residing in off-campus accommodations are the hardest hit, as they rely on boreholes and wells that are often dry . Many have resorted to buying water from private vendors at exorbitant prices, adding to their financial burdens.
The situation is dire, with students forced to fetch water from distant locations, often walking long distances or relying on motorcycles to transport water containers. This has led to a significant increase in water-borne diseases, with many students reporting cases of typhoid fever, cholera, and other water-related illnesses.
The university’s water infrastructure is inadequate, and the existing facilities are overwhelmed by the growing student population. The institution’s efforts to address the issue have been insufficient, leaving students to fend for themselves.
The water crisis has also affected academic performance, as students spend valuable study time searching for water. The situation is particularly challenging for students with special needs, who require access to clean water for their health and hygiene.
Students are calling on the university administration and government to take immediate action to address the water crisis. They demand the construction of additional water infrastructure, repair of existing facilities, and provision of safe and affordable water for all students.
The water challenges faced by Federal University Kashere students are a stark reminder of the need for prioritizing access to clean water in educational institutions. It is imperative that the university and government take responsibility for ensuring that students have access to this basic necessity, enabling them to focus on their studies and achieve their full potential.
