- The Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) has retained its hold as the ruling party in Kano State as the Supreme Court has affirmed the election of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
- Yusuf, who contested under the NNPP was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) but the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenged his victory in court.
The election of Abba Yusuf to the governorship of Kano State has been certified by the Supreme Court.
Gov Yusuf, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) candidate, as governor of the state was wrongly dismissed by the tribunal and the court of appeal, according to a five-member panel of the supreme court
After hearing the appeals on December 21, 2023, the court has deferred its decision.
Yusuf was removed from office as state governor in September by the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.
Voter registration forms for Yusuf were not legally stamped, signed, and dated, so the tribunal subtracted 165,663 votes from the 1,019,602 total votes reported.
The tribunal then declared Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the vote.
On November 17, the court of appeal upheld the tribunal’s verdict and added that Yusuf was not a member of the NNPP when he contested the election.
