As Nigeria’s leading opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prepare for the next general elections in 2027, stakeholders have expressed concern over the leadership style of Atiku Abubakar as opposition arrowhead in the country.
Some party sources believe that Atiku has been unable to effectively serve as an opposition leader because of his ambition.
A key stakeholder in the PDP, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that for a long while now, Atiku had not made any financial contribution to the running of the party.
He said Atiku’s ambition is more important to him than the state of the party, adding that the former vice president believes that anytime he wishes, the presidential ticket of the party would be given to him.
The party source said that with this kind of mindset, Atiku would find it difficult to play the role of opposition leader.
“When last did Atiku contribute towards this party? Atiku has not made any financial contribution to this party in a long while and yet he wants to become president on the platform of the party.
“He thinks anytime he comes, he will always get the ticket, but the party is wiser now,” he told Daily Independent.
