- The local government election across all 30 LGAs and 332 wards in the state was trailed by violence, controversies and litigations.
- The election was conducted despite advice from the attorney general of the federation, who had called for the poll not to be held.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has applauded Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, along with residents, for successfully organising the local government elections, calling it a triumph for democracy and justice.
In a statement on Sunday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, emphasised that the party’s landslide win demonstrates overwhelming public backing for Adeleke’s progress in infrastructure, empowerment, and human development.
The Osun state local government election followed a court case where the Federal High Court in Osogbo removed local government officials, but the Court of Appeal in Akure later reinstated them.
On February 17, Adeleke’s PDP supporters fiercely resisted the reinstatement of opposition All Progressives Congress chairmen, triggering violent clashes that resulted in deaths across Osun State.
Regardless of these conflicts, the scheduled local government elections proceeded without delay on Saturday as planned.
Osun State Independent Electoral Commission Chairman, Hashim Abioye, declared that PDP’s 30 chairmanship candidates and 332 councillors had won in their respective local governments and wards.
Ologunagba commended Osun residents for coming out in large numbers to participate in their democratic rights through the elections.
He stated, “The Peoples Democratic Party congratulates Governor Ademola Adeleke, the government, and the people of Osun State for the successful conduct and outcome of the local government elections held on Saturday, 22 February 2025.”
“The free, fair, transparent, and credible election conducted by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission is a resounding triumph for democracy, the rule of law, and the constitutional principle of true federalism.
“It represents the will of the people of Osun State over the anti-democratic forces of the APC, which sought to take control of the state through illegal means.”
The PDP appreciated Osun voters for resisting coercion and alleged APC efforts to sabotage the electoral process.
The party further asserted that its comprehensive win across 30 local governments, despite alleged APC disruptions, reaffirms its political supremacy in Osun, the South-West, and the nation.
“Moreover, the PDP’s overwhelming victory in the election reflects the people’s appreciation of Governor Adeleke’s outstanding achievements.
“His administration has prioritised infrastructural development, citizen empowerment, and human capital projects across key sectors, including power, healthcare, education, road construction, water resources, agriculture, and food production,” the statement continued.
The PDP encouraged newly elected chairmen and councillors to align with Governor Adeleke’s development plans, ensuring local communities benefit from his governance focused on the people’s welfare.
