Arthritis is a general term for any disorder that affects the joints. It is not one disease alone but an umbrella term used to describe more than 100 different conditions that affect the different joints of the body and enjoy the description or diagnosis of arthritis.
A joint is where two or more bones meet such as in the wrist, ankles, hips, knuckles and knees. These joints are of several different types.
There are synovial joints, ball-and-socket joints, hinge joints and fibrous joints. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced range of motion in the affected joints.
Arthritis is the swelling and pain that affect one or more joints around the body and is caused mainly by the wear and tear in those joints leading to their slow deterioration in conformity with increasing age.
Such consequential damage can also affect other organs and tissues in the body, such as the skin, eyes, heart, and lungs. As we shall come to appreciate in the course of this essay, there are certain factors which make some people to be more prone to the development of various types of arthritis when compared with other people even within the same family.
Osteoarthritis is caused by the wear and tear of the cartilage that covers the ends of the bones in the joints. Cartilage is the hard, slippery tissue or material that covers the end of bones where they form a joint to break down.
In the absence of such an adverse development, cartilage helps cushion the joints and allows for smooth movement between the bones that are in contact. When cartilage breaks down, the bones rub against each other, causing damage, pain and inflammation.
Osteoarthritis usually affects the joints that bear weight, such as the knees, hips, and spine. It can also affect the hands, feet, and neck. Osteoarthritis tends to be more common in older adults, people who are overweight, and people who have a family history of the disease.
This level of damage often develops over many years but that can be hastened by injury to the joint or an infection.
Over time, osteoarthritis would also cause changes in the bones and deterioration of the associated connective tissues attaching the various muscles to the bones and helping to hold such joints together.
When the cartilage, which is tough and slick like glass, is damaged, nearly frictionless movements between the bones ceases and pain results with associated swelling.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, which means the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. In rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system targets the synovium, which is the thin membrane that lines the joints. The synovium produces a fluid that lubricates the joints and nourishes the cartilage.
The said synovium is a special type of connective tissue located in joints like the knees and elbows, and lines the entire inner surface of the joint that is not covered with cartilage. When the synovium becomes inflamed and swollen, it damages the cartilage and bone within the joint.
Rheumatoid arthritis can affect any joint in the body, but it often starts in the smaller joints of the hands and feet, which represents a key difference between this kind of arthritis and osteoarthritis that starts from the big joints of the knees and hips.
It can also affect the same joints on both sides of the body. Rheumatoid arthritis is more common in women, people who smoke, and people who have a genetic predisposition to the disease while most of the people who develop who have gout, another type of arthritis are men.
Some types of arthritis run in families and in such families, the members are often more likely to develop the disease if there is another family member like a sibling or a parent already suffering from or has suffered from it.
The risk of many different types of arthritis generally increases with age but there are instances when this sometimes debilitating condition can begin in childhood.
This is often seen in children under the age of 16 years and may be found in those as young as 5 years. This condition used to be called juvenile rheumatoid arthritis but is now called juvenile idiopathic arthritis reflecting the fact that its origin is unknown.
Affected children may present with a limp which is usually worse early in the morning or after a nap. In other children, there may be a swelling of the affected joint, usually the knee, and the parent may then observe that the affected child appears to be more clumsy than usual.
There is no cure for arthritis, but there are treatments that can help manage the symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease.
There are various types of arthritis, which are quite different from OA and RA discussed above as we will appreciate in the subsequent paragraph and their treatment can be very challenging.
Some of the less common types of arthritis are as follows;
Dear doctor, I am 18 years old and I have pimples and a dark spot on my face. Please prescribe a cream for me. 0704*******
It is possible to simply prescribe for you unless one can see what you are talking about. Pimples are clear enough but it is less certain what you mean by a dark spot. However, it would be better for you to see your doctor for this prescription, or go to the hospital normally used by your parents.
Hello doctor, I am a 23 year old girl. Whenever I have sex, my period will come twice in a month but when I do not have sex, it will come normally once in a month. What is the cause? 0706*******
Answer: Well you did not disclose whether you take any form of contraceptive or not. At any rate, one of those episodes of bleeding is not a genuine period and it would be better for you to see a gynaecologist for a detailed examination to make sure that your cervix is healthy among other issues about your reproductive organs that need to be resolved.
Good day doctor, when I want to urinate, blood and a white thing will come out of my penis. What can I do? Waiting to hear from you. 0803*******
A laboratory examination of your urine is the most important thing for you to conduct right now. That will reveal what the cause of your problem is and what the likely remedy should be. Do not delay further. See a doctor for direction as soon as possible. Blood coming from any opening of the body is never good news but in this case, depending on how old you are, the possible causes could range from an infection to benign prostatic hyperplasia to cancer. Such cancer could arise from the prostate, or bladder or kidney but as stated above, it all depends on how much you see and whether it is mixed with your urine or it comes out separately in addition to the whitish substance.
