Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signalling a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso received his party membership card on Monday at Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Bompai, Kano, in a ceremony attended by prominent political figures, including former Senate President David Mark, Sokoto state Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Senator Dino Melaye, and former APC national chairman John Odigie-Oyegun.

The move comes months after Kwankwaso’s NNPP experienced internal turbulence and a decline in political influence following the defection of several key leaders, including current Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who left the NNPP for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kwankwaso himself had remained a central figure in the NNPP, leading its factional operations in the north, but the party has struggled to maintain cohesion amid defections to both the APC and other emerging parties like the ADC.

By joining the ADC, Kwankwaso is aligning with a party that has been steadily gaining relevance as a platform for former ruling party officials, defectors, and opposition figures seeking an alternative to the dominant APC and PDP.

The ADC has positioned itself as a viable platform for political veterans and emerging leaders, with a focus on coalition-building and providing a credible opposition to both the APC and PDP.

Kwankwaso’s entry into the party is expected to strengthen its profile in Kano, a key political battleground, and potentially reshape alliances across the region.
