In a landmark development for Nigerian football, Samson Adamu has been appointed as the Acting General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced the news on its verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, celebrating the appointment as a significant achievement for the nation’s football administration. In its statement, the federation congratulated Adamu, highlighting his rise as a proud milestone for Nigeria on the continental stage.

“Congratulations to our own Samson Adamu who has been appointed Acting General Secretary of CAF,” the statement read.

Although details surrounding the appointment remain limited, Adamu’s elevation is seen as a reflection of the growing influence of Nigerian administrators within African football governance.

The development follows the resignation of Véron Mosengo-Omba, marking a significant leadership transition within the Cairo-based organisation. Adamu’s appointment is historic, as he becomes the first Nigerian to occupy the position in CAF’s more than 70-year history.

Mosengo-Omba, who stepped down after over three decades in international football administration, said his decision was driven by a desire to focus on personal projects after years of service.

“After over 30 years of an international professional career dedicated to promoting football that brings people together, educates, and creates opportunities, I have decided to step down,” he stated.

He added that he was leaving the organisation with a sense of fulfilment, having addressed concerns raised during his tenure, and expressed appreciation to CAF leadership, including President Patrice Motsepe, as well as colleagues and stakeholders across the continent.

The appointment of Adamu is widely regarded as a landmark moment, underscoring Nigeria’s growing footprint in continental football administration.
