Crisis Brews As Kano South Lawmakers Shun Gov Yusuf’s Invite, Hold Emergency Meeting

Kano South concerned legislators convene a critical meeting under the leadership of Sen. Kawu Sumail

Lawmakers from Kano South Senatorial District have held what they described as a “critical meeting” to deliberate on their political future amid growing discontent with the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The meeting, led by Senator Kawu Sumaila, was attended by several prominent members of the House of Representatives, including Alhassan Doguwa, Kabiru Rurum, Abdulmumin Jibrin, and Abdullahi Rogo.

The development comes barely a day after Sumaila and Rurum reportedly boycotted an invitation by Governor Yusuf to attend an enlarged meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) members of the State and National Assembly.

The boycott has further fuelled speculation about widening cracks within the political ranks in Kano State.

Sources familiar with Monday’s meeting, which was held in Senator Sumaila’s office in Abuja, told Daily Nigerian that the lawmakers extensively discussed their political direction.

The legislators were said to have expressed dissatisfaction with what they described as political neglect of the Kano South zone by the state government.

According to the sources, the lawmakers believe the governor and his close political associates have taken several key political decisions affecting Kano South without proper consultation.

“We are in touch with serving and former lawmakers, as well as former party leaders who were recently sidelined from our zone,” a source said.

“We are also consulting top businessmen, clerics and other stakeholders from Kano South to chart a new political course.”

Another source disclosed that the aggrieved lawmakers may meet with Governor Yusuf to present their concerns and proposals.

While it remains unclear whether the lawmakers are considering defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), sources hinted that they may take a decisive political stand if their grievances are not addressed.
