Socio cultural groups, Ethnic youth leaders have commended Prof. Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the extension of the deadline for political parties to submit their register of members.

Originally set for April 21, 2026, the deadline has now been moved to May 10, 2026, according to a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.

The Commission explained that the decision to extend the deadline was made after consultations with leaders of political parties earlier in the week, aimed at ensuring inclusivity and providing sufficient time for compliance.

The Youth leaders in a statement by its deputy spokesperson, Mirabel Ashara described the move as a “demonstration of fairness and responsiveness” by the Commission.

They noted that the extension would give political parties the opportunity to conduct thorough internal audits, update their membership lists, and ensure that eligible members are not left out.

“This decision reflects the Commission’s commitment to a credible and transparent electoral process. By listening to stakeholders, INEC is reinforcing confidence in the democratic process.”

The youth leaders therefore called on all political actors to take advantage of the extension responsibly, warning that any attempt to exploit the extension for partisan advantage could undermine public trust in the electoral system.
