A fire outbreak in the early hours of Saturday has destroyed two rooms in a six-room bungalow in Ilorin, following a power surge.

The incident occurred around 2:11 a.m. at Danialu Alapata compound in the Gaa Akabi area, affecting part of the residential building before it was contained by operatives of the Kwara State Fire Service.

Hassan Adekunle, the public relations officer of the service said the swift intervention of firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to other sections of the building and nearby properties.

“The incident involved a bungalow comprising about six rooms, out of which two rooms were affected by the fire.

“Through the swift efforts of the firefighters, the blaze was contained, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building and nearby properties,” he said.

Adekunle added that preliminary investigations traced the cause of the fire to an electrical surge.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by a power surge, which ignited combustible materials within the affected rooms,” he stated.

Alabi Muhammed, the director of the Kwara state fire service urged residents to adopt preventive safety measures to reduce the risk of similar incidents.

“Residents should ensure the installation of surge protectors, avoid overloading electrical systems, and conduct regular inspections of wiring by qualified professionals,” he advised.

He also encouraged the public to switch off electrical appliances when not in use and promptly report fire emergencies.
