Speaking in Memphis hours after first announcing that discussions aimed at resolving tensions were ongoing, Trump said Washington believes Iran is now serious and “wants to settle,” adding that the US is “systematically dismantling the region”.
“We are now having really good discussions I started last night — little bit a night before that — and I think they are very good. They want peace. They’ve agreed they will not have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.
Iran earlier rejected claims of active talks with the US, saying such assertions do not reflect its official position.
Speaker of Iran’s parliament earlier posted the first official reaction on X. “No negotiations have been held with the US, and fake news is used to manipulate the financial and oil markets and escape the quagmire in which the US and Israel are trapped,” the post read.
Trump, however, doubled down on his remarks, signalling a potential breakthrough even as the two sides publicly diverge on the status of engagement.
