A factional leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has announced that the party will bar individuals above 55-years from contesting elective positions on its platform in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview with BBC Hausa monitored by Blueprint, Nafiu said the proposed policy is designed to open up the political space for younger Nigerians and encourage generational leadership.
He criticised what he said is “influx of elderly figures” into the party, arguing that leadership opportunities should be handed to younger members.
According to him, repositioning the party with a youth-focused approach remains a top priority.
The ADC has recently been grappling with an internal leadership tussle, with rival factions laying claims to the control of the party.
The crisis has deepened following the stance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which has yet to formally recognise any of the opposing groups.
Nafiu, however, rejected allegations that he is being backed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
He described the claims as “baseless” and accused some party members of importing divisive tendencies from their previous political affiliations.
He also dismissed attempts by certain individuals to convene meetings outside established party structures, insisting that only constitutionally recognised processes would be respected.
On the lingering crisis, Bala said adherence to the party’s constitution remains the only path to resolving the dispute.
He urged new entrants to properly familiarise themselves with the party’s guidelines and follow due procedures.
