
The United Nation Children Fund ( UNICEF ) and its partners like Safe the Children, Norwegian Refugee Council, Glo Foundation, National NGO Consortium, have said that they have secured a project under Education Cannot Wait Programme (ECW) to boost school enrollments especially girl child education in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.
Speaking at a press conference in Yola weekend, UNICEF education specialist, Bauchi field office, Aminu Ado Ibrahim, said that the project is aimed at expanding access to education especially among children affected by conflict, displacements and poverty across the affected states.
He noted that the project was designed to last for 36 months and targeted at IDPs, out-of-school children, children with disabilities among other vulnerable groups in the society.
He said each of the partner is assigned specific local governments to handle.
According to him, the project which is being implemented in 7 local governments of Adamawa state namely Ganye, Shelleng, Mubi , Fufore, Michika, Madagali and Yola south is targeted at taking 130,000 children out of street back to classrooms .
Also speaking , the Chief UNICEF Bauchi field office, Dr. Nuzrat Rafique, reiterated UNICEF commitments to champion the cause of women and children across the globe, stressing that the project would go along way to help children grow as leaders of tomorrow.
She noted that every child must be protected and have rights to some basic needs including education, hence the need for all hands to be on deck and ensure that girl child and children have access to this basic rights without any deprivation or barriers capable of hindering their growth, development and survival.
On his part, the Executive Secretary Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB), Dr. Murtala Babayi, commended UNICEF and other partners for continuous supports assuring them of the state government’s commitments to ensure the success of the project and its sustainability in the state.
