Afenifere. the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, has
expressed concern over rising insecurity in the south-west, calling on
governors in the region to take more decisive actions.
In a communique issued after a caucus meeting of the group
held on April 14 at the residence of Reuben Fasoranti in Akure, Ondo state, the
group said it deliberated on issues including security, the economy, and the
political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election.
Afenifere said the increasing wave of violence in Yorubaland
is a source of concern, urging state governments to strengthen regional
security outfits such as Amotekun and improve surveillance systems.
The group also called for renewed efforts toward the
establishment of state police, adding that collaboration with neighbouring
states like Kwara, Kogi, Edo, and Delta is necessary to curb cross-border
crimes.
“Serious concern was expressed on the increasing terror acts
in Yorubaland. It called on governors of the six states in the South West to
take more decisive actions on insecurity that seems to be ravaging the land
now,” the statement reads.
“Part of the actions can be strengthening Amotekun, paying
more attention to surveillance and expediting actions on the setting up of
state police. These can be done in collaboration with governments of
neighbouring states, especially Kwara, Kogi, Edo and Delta which also have
sizeable Yoruba populations.”
While acknowledging recent steps taken by President Bola
Tinubu, including meetings with security chiefs, the group urged the federal
government to further equip security agencies and boost the morale of
personnel.
Afenifere also called for a review of internal security
structures, warning that local collaborators have contributed to the
persistence of insecurity.
The group commiserated with victims of violent attacks and
families of fallen security personnel, urging authorities to intensify efforts
to end the worsening security situation.
On the political climate, Afenifere advised politicians to
conduct their activities peacefully ahead of the 2027 elections, warning
against violence, thuggery, and character assassination.
The group reiterated its long-standing call for
restructuring, expressing support for efforts by the federal government to
reform the country.
Afenifere also announced that the 100th birthday of
Fasoranti will be celebrated on May 11, with governors and prominent Nigerians
expected to attend.
