The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), over his threat to shoot Channels Television presenter Seun Okinbaloye.
Wike made the threat while responding to Okinbaloye’s comment that a one-party system could harm Nigeria’s democracy, saying, “If there was any way to break the screen, I would have shot him.”
ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described Wike’s statement as “irresponsible and unacceptable,” warning that it constitutes a direct attack on freedom of speech.
He also expressed concern that after undermining opposition parties, the President Bola Tinubu government appears to be targeting journalists.
The statement read, “Wike threatening to shoot Seun Okinbaloye from Channels Television for doing his job as a journalist is irresponsible and unacceptable.
“This must be condemned by all lovers of freedom of speech. After destroying opposition parties, they now want to start shooting journalists.”
