Former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Aniekan Uko, has resigned from his position as Special Adviser on Legislative Affairs to Governor Umo Eno.

Uko, who represented Ibesikpo Asutan state constituency during his time in the assembly, formally communicated his decision in a resignation letter addressed to the governor, citing the need to pursue his political aspirations.

In his letter, he expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve in the administration but noted that “evolving circumstances” had made it necessary for him to step down and focus on his future ambitions.

He also pledged continued support for the government in other capacities.

His exit from the cabinet has fueled speculation that he is preparing to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives, commonly referred to as the Green Chamber, ahead of upcoming elections.

The development came against the backdrop of earlier directive by Governor Eno, who had cautioned political appointees against resigning to seek elective offices.

The governor had disclosed that a prior arrangement guaranteed automatic return tickets for sitting state and National Assembly members who defected with him to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in June 2025.

However, that arrangement was later reversed following widespread outburst from aggrieved aspirants, who argued that the move undermined democratic principles, zoning arrangements, and the electorate’s right to freely choose their representatives.

Uko’s resignation now signals a fresh test of the political dynamics within the state, particularly as jockeying for elective positions begins to intensify ahead of the next election cycle.
