Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, former governors Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso are among the Chieftains of African Democratic Congress (ADC) who are currently leading massive #OccupyINEC protest in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Others who joined the protest are formers governors Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, and Aminu Tambuwal on Wednesday.

Blueprint.ng reports that the protest is to challenging the stance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s refusal to recognise the party’s leadership led by David Mark.

Other top figures present at the march included former Senate President David Mark and key stakeholders within the party, as protesters carried placards with inscriptions calling for the protection of democratic institutions and due process.

Atiku via his Facebook handle said, “Other leaders and I of the ADC are peacefully protesting against the partisanship of the electoral umpire,” he wrote. “Our patriotic stance is aimed at safeguarding our democracy and preventing the erosion of democratic principles.”

The protesters had earlier gathered at David Mark’s residence, where a morning service was held to mark his 78th birthday, before moving out in a coordinated march.

Other group of protesters came from different parts of the Federal Capital Territory.

ADC, an exiting party in Nigeria became a household name few months ago after political heavyweights decamped from other opposition and ruling parties to form a coalition.

The partyhas continued to grow.

However, a major controversy was stirred few days ago when INEC announced that it will no longer recognise David Mark-led ADC due to existence of factions, coupled with a Court of Appeal judgement.

On Tuesday, another faction of the opposition party reared up, claiming the leadership of ADC.
