The Nigeria Police Force in Bauchi State has launched a manhunt for an unidentified assailant who brutally attacked a 22-year-old female student of Sa’adu Zungur University, severing her ear and thumb.
The victim, Maryam Yakini, was reportedly attacked on April 23 in Gadau, Itas/Gadau Local Government Area, while returning to her off-campus residence.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Nafiu Habib, the incident was reported at about 7:30 p.m. at the Gadau Police Outstation.
He said the suspect, armed with a machete and a knife, ambushed the student near Villa Lodge, inflicting severe injuries on her.
Habib disclosed that the victim lost her left thumb and ear during the attack and was rushed to a teaching hospital in Azare, where she is currently receiving treatment and responding.
“The assailant also dispossessed her of personal belongings, including two ATM cards and her school identity card,” he added.
The police spokesperson dismissed reports circulating in some quarters that the student had died, describing them as false and capable of inciting panic within the academic community.
“These claims are misleading and untrue. They appear to be a deliberate attempt to create fear and unrest among students,” he said.
Habib advised students to avoid isolated areas, particularly at night, and urged members of the public to provide credible information that could aid in apprehending the suspect.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
