The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has made an urgent appeal to the Supreme Court of Nigeria, asking for a swift judgment in its ongoing leadership dispute.

The party warned that any further delay could cost it a place in the 2027 general elections.

In a letter dated April 28 and addressed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the party pleaded for a ruling within three days. It said the situation had become critical and time-sensitive.

According to the ADC, the absence of a decision is already creating uncertainty around its leadership structure.

The letter was signed by the party’s lead counsel, Shuaibu Aruwa, who reminded the court that the matter was heard on April 22, 2026. He noted that judgment had been reserved, with no date fixed for delivery. He stressed that the delay is now affecting the party’s ability to function.

Aruwa explained that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), listed as the fourth respondent in the appeal, had already acted based on a lower court ruling.

According to him, INEC has withdrawn recognition of the party’s leadership. This, he said, has left the ADC in a leadership vacuum.

The party argued that while it remains a legally registered political platform, the absence of recognized leadership puts it in a weak position. It said it cannot effectively carry out activities required under electoral laws.

The ADC also pointed to INEC’s timetable for the 2027 elections. It noted that preparations have already begun, with deadlines for political parties to meet key requirements. The party warned that without a clear leadership structure, it may be unable to comply with those conditions.

Part of the letter read, “My Lord, the ADC’s ability to comply with these statutory requirements to participate in the 2027 General Elections is wholly dependent on the timely delivery of the judgment in the instant Appeal.”

The party further warned that missing the timeline could lead to its exclusion from the election. It said such an outcome would affect millions of Nigerians who identify with its platform. It added that this would deny them the right to participate in the democratic process through their preferred party.

“My Lord, we are mindful of the enormous responsibilities and workload of this Honourable Court,” the letter continued. “We are equally aware that justice delayed, in this peculiar circumstance, would amount to justice denied.”

The ADC maintained that the issue goes beyond internal party matters. It said the outcome would shape its political future and determine whether its supporters can contest and vote under its banner in 2027.
