The story started on X on April 29 when a post said, “Just in: Bola Ahmed Tinubu is allegedly plotting to install his son, Seyi Tinubu, as Lagos governor in 2031.” It quickly got hundreds of likes, reposts and angry comments. Some people called it a family dynasty.
Others said it shows how politics really works in Nigeria.Right now, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is serving his second term, which ends in 2027. Political whispers say some powerful people in the All Progressives Congress (APC) want the next governor after Sanwo-Olu to serve only one term. That would open the way for Seyi Tinubu to run in 2031. A report in January 2026 said party leaders were even thinking of bringing back former governor Akinwunmi Ambode for one term just to clear the path for Seyi later.
Seyi Tinubu, 40, is a businessman and has been very active in Lagos politics. Some youth groups have already endorsed him for governor – but for 2027, not 2031. Others say he has no plan to run soon. There is still no official word from the president or his son.
Many Lagosians are not happy. “This is not democracy; this is family business,” one person wrote online. Supporters of the idea say Seyi is young, smart and knows Lagos well, just like his father did when he was governor.
For now, it remains only a rumour. But the talk has already started fresh debate about godfather politics and family power in Nigeria. As 2027 draws closer, eyes are on who will really pick the next leader of Lagos.
