The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has raised fresh concerns over a surge in fraudulent messages and links aimed at gaining unauthorised access to individuals’ bank accounts.
In a statement issued on April 21, the apex bank disclosed that cybercriminals are circulating deceptive emails and online messages falsely linked to the institution.
The warning was conveyed by Hakama Sidi Ali, the acting director of corporate communications.
According to the bank, the messages are designed to mislead recipients into clicking malicious links and disclosing sensitive information.
It noted that such content often spreads false claims about its leadership, licensing processes and policy decisions.
“These fraudulent messages, which prompt recipients to click links, peddle false information about the Bank’s leadership, licensing, and policy issues, and are intended to hack personal accounts,” the statement said.
The development comes amid growing concerns over cybersecurity threats targeting public institutions.
Recently, the Corporate Affairs Commission temporarily shut down its online portal following a reported cyber incident that exposed vulnerabilities in government systems.
The CBN urged Nigerians to rely solely on its official website and verified communication channels for accurate information.
It also advised the public to avoid clicking suspicious links or sharing personal details online.
The bank further stressed the need for heightened vigilance as cyber threats become more sophisticated, warning that individuals must take responsibility for safeguarding their financial information in an increasingly digital environment.
