The 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has resigned from the party and announced plans to join the Peoples Redemption Party.
Baba-Ahmed made the announcement on Tuesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.
He said his decision to leave the Labour Party was due to internal disagreements, a departure from the party’s founding ideals, and what he described as interference in opposition politics.
According to him, certain developments within the party had made the political environment uncomfortable, adding that the party no longer represents the values it once stood for.
Baba-Ahmed also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress, accusing the government of focusing on weakening opposition parties instead of addressing key national challenges such as insecurity and economic difficulties.
He stated that his resignation from the Labour Party would take effect at midnight, confirming the Peoples Redemption Party as his next political platform.
Baba-Ahmed added that he intends to work towards producing what he described as a “genuine southern, possibly Christian candidate” under the PRP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
When asked about speculation surrounding his possible presidential ambition, he did not give a direct response but noted that he remains satisfied with his political and professional accomplishments.
