In a significant political shift ahead of the party primaries, Rijo Shekari, Senior Legislative Aide to the Deputy Senate President, has officially dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Shekari announced his defection on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, during the Kaduna South Senatorial District expanded caucus meeting of the PDP held in Kafanchan, Kaduna State. He was warmly received by party leaders at the event.
Speaking after his formal declaration, Shekari said the move followed extensive consultations with his supporters and political associates.
“I took this decision after wide consultations with my supporters and political associates. It became necessary for me to align with a platform that truly reflects my political ideals,” he stated.
He emphasised that his decision was driven by a strong commitment to the independence and dignity of the Southern Kaduna people, adding that the PDP offers the best platform to advance that cause.
Shekari also declared his intention to contest the Zango/Jaba Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives under the PDP banner, subject to the will of the people and the outcome of the party primaries.
“I intend to offer myself for service and representation of the Zango/Jaba Federal Constituency under the PDP… I am grateful for the opportunities I had in the APC, but prevailing political realities have made it necessary for me to move on,” he added.
PDP leaders in the district welcomed the defection, describing it as a major boost for the party.
One leader noted that Shekari’s experience in governance and legislative processes would strengthen grassroots mobilisation ahead of the primaries.
The party assured him of full integration into its structure.
The development comes amid ongoing political realignments in Nigeria as various politicians reposition themselves ahead of future elections.
