BBC Newsnight presenter Victoria Derbyshire invited Republican and former Donald Trump supporter, Marjorie Taylor Greene, onto the latest instalment of the current affairs programme, who claimed the US President’s mental capacity should be examined. Greene, who was elected to Congress in 2020 but severed ties with Trump in 2025, heavily criticised the 79-year-old US leader and branded him “insane”. During the interview, Derbyshire said: “You, of course, were one of Trump’s biggest supporters, and one of the reasons you fell out with him was over the release of the Epstein files. You have known him for years; you are now saying his mental capacity should be examined and that he has gone insane.”

When asked what she means, Marjorie replied: “Well, the way that the President has acted and the words that he’s used and the change in policy that he has taken has been shocking to many Americans who supported him and voted for him.”

She went on to say she campaigned with the President for years and spoke at many of his rallies before claiming Americans are “sick and tired of funding the foreign wars”.

Marjorie added: “When the President called and said he would wipe out an entire civilisation of people – we are talking about innocent men, women, and children. That is insanity, and those are words which should be taken very seriously.”

She said Americans demanded transparency with the Jeffrey Epstein files and that Trump said this was something he would deliver before fighting “everyone in Congress ” on releasing the files.

The interview sparked a wave of reaction on X, with one person writing: “BBC have sunk to new depths first Tucker Carlson and now this rubbish.”

A second said: “Pretty clear what she’s saying.” A third added: “Not sure what’s happening with Victoria lately, she seems to need the obvious spelling out to her.” Derbyshire reacted to the comment with the eyes emoji.
