Activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore has urged the Nigerian Correctional Services to ensure that corrupt top politicians face the same legal processes as ordinary citizens.
Speaking to officials, Sowore highlighted a glaring inequality in the justice system. He expressed concern that while “poor Nigerians” facing various charges are routinely transported to court in Black Maria vehicles, politicians who embezzle public funds often receive preferential treatment.
Appealing to the officers to threat some of the suspects who were inside the Black Maria, Sowore said the Nigerian masses were mostly suffering from the impact of corrupt practices by politicians.
Speaking to the officials in Pidgun, the activists said, “Make una let them breathe na, na the politicians wey una suppose to dey put inside this thing, like Wike dem, Tinubu dem.
“Na dem suppose dey inside Black Maria, these are innocent Nigerians. Na Tinubu, Wike, Malami. I want to see you bring Malami to court inside this Black Maria,” Sowore said.
At this, the officials laughed while he continued stating, “It is not a laughing matter oo.
“When they want to bring them from prisons, they will carry Mercedes-Benz to bring them (too politicians).
“But here you are, carry poor people inside black Maria make dem they suffocate,” he said.
Sowore further urged the prisoners to ensure that while incarcerated at the correctional facility, they should try as much as they can to participate in the Revolution Now struggle which he coordinates.
“Because one day, all of una go free and you go come replace all these thieves, when you go back (to the facility), make una dey advise una selves because this struggle must start from prison, must start from everywhere,” he added.
