Former Nigerian Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has been appointed senior strategic adviser to the Director-General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), Jean Kaseya.

According to a statement released on Monday, Osinbajo’s appointment comes at a pivotal time as Africa CDC advances the Africa Health Security and Sovereignty (AHSS) agenda.

The initiative aimed to enhance Africa’s influence in global health, increase domestic funding, accelerate local production of medical supplies, and strengthen health systems for pandemic preparedness and response.

Kaseya highlighted Osinbajo’s extensive experience, saying: “Professor Osinbajo brings exceptional experience at the intersection of governance, finance, law, and diplomacy.

“His leadership will be invaluable as Africa acts with greater ambition and authority on the future of health.”

In his new role, Osinbajo will advise on reshaping global health systems, sustainable healthcare financing, local production of medical goods, strategic collaborations, and policy direction for Africa CDC and the African Union.

Osinbajo served as Nigeria’s vice-president from 2015 to 2023 and was previously Lagos State’s attorney-general and commissioner for justice from 1999 to 2007.

During his tenure, he chaired Nigeria’s Economic Sustainability Committee, led reforms to improve the ease of doing business, and helped implement key social investment programmes.
