The Federal Government on Friday assured Nigerians that ongoing economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy, foreign exchange adjustments, and fiscal restructuring, are designed to deliver long-term national benefits despite current economic pressures.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the assurance in Lagos while receiving the “Image Maker Award 2026”, urging Nigerians to remain patient as government policies begin to take full effect.
Idris said the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to transparent communication and consistent engagement with citizens on policy direction, noting that effective information management is critical to sustaining public trust during periods of reform.
According to him, government communication must go beyond information-sharing to building confidence, unity, and hope among Nigerians.
“As we navigate major policy shifts—including fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange reforms, and fiscal restructuring—our approach has been anchored on clarity, consistency and credibility,” he said.
He maintained that while the reforms may pose short-term hardship, they are necessary steps to reposition the economy for sustainable growth and improved fiscal stability.
The minister also stressed the importance of timely and accurate information in safeguarding national security, adding that the ministry is working closely with security agencies and media organisations to ensure public calm and prevent misinformation.
He further highlighted the role of the media in strengthening democracy, urging journalists to continue supporting efforts aimed at bridging the gap between government policies and public understanding.
Idris reaffirmed his commitment to responsible public communication anchored on truth, transparency and accountability, describing the award as a call to do more in service of Nigerians.
The event, organised by Vanguard Media Limited, was attended by prominent political and religious figures, including governors, ministers, and senior clerics, who commended efforts to improve government communication and national cohesion.
