
The federal government, Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to promote local manufacturing of pharmaceuticals through policy enablement, investment mobilisation, regulatory improvement, tax reliefs, local research facilitation and ease of doing business.
Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, stated this while delivering his speech at the grand opening of Sam Pharmaceutical LTD OTA Plant at Ilo-Awela Road, Ota, Ogun state.
He stated the importance of the event cannot be over-emphasized, especially at a time of renewed commitment to unlock healthcare value chain, not just for economic reasons but as a key enabler of medical sovereignty.
Dr Salako added that the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has now positioned the sector to drive growth and development in many other ancillary sectors.
The minister stated further that the government has developed bold initiatives to drive reforms in the pharmaceutical manufacturing space, including Presidential Initiative to Unlock Healthcare Value Chains (PVAC), the Presidential Executive Order for Pharmaceutical and Allied Sectors, targeted at revitalising local manufacturing as a driving force for Nigeria’s Health Sector reforms.
Dr Salako stated that the Manufacturing and Access to Vaccines, Medicines and Health Technologies (MAV+) project, Africa’s most ambitious vaccines’ research, development and local manufacturing initiative to the tune of 18 million Euro have been signed, and launched since October 2025 and it is expected to benefit with specific capacity strengthening for stakeholders including local manufacturers in order to improve access to healthcare through the local production of key inputs including vaccines, biologics, diagnostics and devices.
