A civil society organisation called Coalition for Project Rescue Nigeria has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the judiciary to desist from what it called “political witch-hunt” of the leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and alleged destabilisation of the party.
The group said Thursday that its position was arrived at during its conference held Tuesday in Abuja.
A speaker at the event, Hon. Balarabe Rufai, accused the EFCC of selective justice by focusing on the leaders of the opposition, citing the case of the former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, as an example.
He alleged that Malami’s “media trials are designed for one purpose: to decapitate the opposition,” while also calling for an immediate end to what he described as a “retaliatory persecution.”
Rufai also challenged Prof. Joash Amupitan- led INEC on neutrality and accountability as INEC is not a “subsidiary of the ruling party.”
The youth leader added that democracy is strengthened by vibrant opposition political parties, and that Nigeria needs “a leader whose loyalty is to the Nigerian constitution,” and not to the government of the day.
He also condemned “weaponisation of law enforcement.”
