Gunmen have reportedly killed a traditional ruler, Eze Joseph of Ikwegbu, in Ishinkwo Autonomous Community, Onicha Local Government Area (LGA) of Ebonyi state.

The monarch was said to have been shot dead on Wednesday night while sleeping in his palace.

Sources in the community alleged that the attackers fired shots through the window, killing him instantly.

Confirming the incident on Thursday morning, Chairman of Onicha LGA, Prince Ikechukwu Ogbofia, said the assailants operated through the window.

Ogbofia noted that the community had recently been embroiled in internal crisis, which may be linked to the attack.

The killing of Eze Ikwegbu brings to four the number of traditional rulers reportedly murdered in Ebonyi state since 2022.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
