A presidential aspirant of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Olamilekan Alex, has pledged to restore the independence of the student body, warning against what he described as growing  interference.

Olamilekan made the declaration shortly after submitting his intent form, insisting that NANS must not be reduced to an appendage of those in power.

The Lagos State University student described himself as a clear-headed leader with a firm ideological grounding, saying his ambition is driven by the need to halt the “growing madness” within the association.

According to him, “NANS must return to its historic role as a vibrant, independent voice for Nigerian students, not a tool in the hands of political authorities. The integrity and legacy of our association must be protected at all costs.”

He alleged that recent developments within the Independent National Electoral Commission point to attempts to manipulate democratic processes, warning that such actions could erode public trust in the system.

He called on students across the country to unite and resist external influence, stressing the need for a strong and collective front to demand accountability and people-oriented governance.

Reaffirming his commitment, the aspirant promised to provide courageous and principled leadership that would reposition NANS as a respected pressure group.

He urged delegates to support his candidacy at the forthcoming NANS national convention scheduled for May 24 in Abuja.
