Insecurity: Bauchi Gov shuts down cattle markets in four LGAs

The governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed on Thursday, approved the immediate closure of several markets across four different Local Government Areas of the state.

The governor in a statement issued by Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado said the closure of the markets is aimed at addressing the growing insecurity in the state.

According to Gidado, the affected markets are located across Alkaleri, Bauchi, Kirfi and Tafawa Balewa LGAs of Bauchi State.

He also explained that the Bauchi State government is currently addressing major security concerns linked to the use of the marketplaces for criminal activities.

Listing some of the criminal activities including the stealing of livestock, the disruption of food supply chains among others, Gidado said that a total of 14 markets were affected by the closures.

In Alkaleri LGA the markets affected are Alkaleri, Mansur, Futuk, Yalo, Gwana, Yalon Gurza, Kuka, Rimi, Pali, Bokwas, Kwaimawa, Mai Ari, Gajin Duguri and Maina Ma’aji.

The markets affected in Kirfi LGA are Lariski Bara, Sharfuri (night market), Cheledi and Boli.

He added that in Tafawa Balewa LGA, five different cattle markets including Burga, Bununu, Ball, Kulumbo and Zwall were shut down.

In Bauchi LGA, the popular Liman Katagum cattle market is also closed.

Gidado also noted that while the market closure is temporary, th measure will remain in force until a conspicuous improvement in security is recorded in these areas.

He assured that the governor has also ordered all security agencies in Bauchi to ensure full compliance with the order.

Local government council, traditional rulers, including emirs, district heads and village heads have also been urged to sensitise residents of the new development and ensure effective monitoring of compliance.
