The vice chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Ishaya Tanko, Thursday said the institution lost two students in the recent violence in Jos, adding that the university remains safe due to strong support from its immediate host communities.

Prof. Ishaya made this known during a press briefing held at the Senate building of the university in Jos.

“For the record, as of this morning, we unfortunately lost two of our dear students, two students and one staff member had various degrees of injuries,” he said.

The VC stated that on March 29, 2026, at Anguwan Rukuba, Abel Joro Gershon, a 300-level Building student, was shot in the stomach, and was admitted at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) intensive care unit  where he later died on Sunday, April 5, 2026, and was buried on April 8, 2026.

He further stated that Ishaya Patrick, a 300-level Geography and Planning student, sustained a gunshot injury to his leg and is currently receiving treatment at JUTH, while Duguryil Ufialas Daniel, a staff of the Directorate of Student Affairs, was shot in the thigh and also undergoing treatment.

“On 1st April 2026, through fresh violence along Bauchi Road, one Adeyomo Oluwafemi Temitope, a 500-level Quantity Survey student of the University of Jos, left the campus alone and found himself in a violent area of Bauchi Road. He was shot and macheted to death by some hoodlums on Wednesday 1st April 2026,” Prof. Ishaya said.

He added that Longji Molshap Wumnokol, a 300-level Geology student, also left campus and was attacked and was critically injured by hoodlums along Bauchi Road. He was initially treated at Ola Hospital before being transferred to JUTH, where he is currently receiving care.

“From the above, we have a total of 5 members of the University of Jos affected, 4 students and 1 staff. We unfortunately lost 2 of the 4 students.

“The entire University community is deeply saddened by the loss of two of our dear students, Adeyomo Oluwafemi Temitope, and Abel Joro Gershon. May the Almighty God grant them eternity and comfort their families,” he said.
