Iran open to Islamabad talks, stresses on terms of a lasting end to war

Iran has reiterated its focus on the terms of bringing the war in West Asia to a conclusive end after missile and drone strikes became a routine occurrence in the region since the US and Israel first attacked Iran on February 28.

Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi on Saturday, April 4, expressed willingness to hold talks in Islamabad, saying his country’s position on the war that has killed at least 3,500 Iranians is being misrepresented.

“What we care about are the terms of a conclusive and lasting END to the illegal war that is imposed on us,” Araghchi posted on X. “Iran’s position is being misrepresented by US media.”

He also thanked Pakistan for its efforts to mediate an end.

Hours later, President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to threaten Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz, the critical waterway for oil and energy shipping, in the next 48 hours. He showed no willingness to discuss the finer details of the terms and conditions of ending a war, though both sides are now on board to talks in principle.

“Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT. Time is running out – 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them,” Trump posted on X.

The US wants to dismantle Iran’s nuclear programme, reasoning that it is a threat to the world in the hands of the wrong people. It was also the key demand in the 15-point plan that the US proposed last month to end the war. Iran dismissed the plan as “maximalist” and said it aims to go on and seek compensation for the damage it suffered from prolonged attacks by the US and Israel, according to Al Jazeera.

As many as 3,531 Iranians including 244 children have been killed in the war, according to rights group HRANA. At the same time, 19 Israelis and 13 US service members have also died.
