A Jigawa-based Islamic cleric, Malam Sani, has sparked widespread reactions after abruptly cancelling his daughter’s wedding just a day before the ceremony—citing the groom’s open support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

The wedding, scheduled to hold on April 3 in the Yalwawa area of Dutse, was called off at the eleventh hour despite full preparations, leaving both families and guests in shock.

According to accounts, the cleric became aware that the prospective groom had been consistently posting images and messages on social media endorsing Tinubu’s 2027 presidential ambition.

The posts reportedly included optimistic predictions about the President’s chances at the polls.

Rather than overlook the matter, Malam Sani reportedly withdrew his consent to the marriage, insisting that the groom’s political stance raised concerns beyond mere opinion.

When community elders stepped in to intervene and mediate the dispute, the cleric maintained his position, arguing that the young man’s political expression reflected what he described as a “lack of compassion and lack of faith”—a justification he said was sufficient to terminate the union.

He reportedly clarified that the decision was not driven by any personal grievance against the groom, but by what he considered a fundamental moral concern.

The sudden cancellation has since generated heated debate across social media platforms, particularly after the story was shared by the account “Uncle Musa,” with Nigerians divided between amusement and criticism over the cleric’s decision.

While some users mocked the development as an extreme reaction to political expression, others defended the cleric’s right to make decisions based on personal convictions.

The incident has further highlighted the growing intersection between politics, religion, and personal relationships in Nigeria, where political affiliations increasingly influence social dynamics, sometimes with far-reaching consequences.
