Labour Party elects new exco in Enugu, expels ex-chairman

The Labour Party (LP), in Enugu state has elected a new set of executives to steer the affairs of the party for the next four years.

The executives emerged through a consensus and voice affirmation at the party’s state congress held at Filbon Hotel, New Haven, Enugu.

Those elected include Chief Ugwu Kingsley Chidera as State Chairman, Dr Chibuzor Onyema as Secretary, Chukwuemeka Ephraim Ugwu as Deputy Chairman, Ochi Chimezie as Youth Leader, and Nwankwo Charity Chiyeaka as Woman Leader, among others.

In a major development, the party also announced the expulsion of its former State Chairman, Casmir Uchenna Agbo, over alleged anti-party activities.

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected Chairman, Chief Ugwu Kingsley Chidera, expressed appreciation to party members for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to reposition the party for greater impact.

He described his emergence as coming at a critical time in Nigeria’s history, stressing the need for renewed vision, purposeful leadership, and unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and people-centered governance.

“Our party is founded on the principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability. Every Nigerian deserves access to quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunities,” he said.

Chidera noted that the challenges facing the state and the nation ranging from economic hardship to governance deficits require collective resolve, adding that the Labour Party has the capacity and determination to drive meaningful change.

Outlining his priorities, he pledged to strengthen party structures across all wards and local government areas, deepen engagement with members and stakeholders, and promote people-oriented policies.

Speaking to journalists, the State Secretary, Dr Chibuzor Onyema, expressed confidence that the party would secure more elective positions in the 2027 general elections compared to 2023.

He noted that the party was reorganising and strengthening its structures with the aim of taking over the State Government House and gaining majority representation in the State House of Assembly.
