The Lagos state government Thursday intensified efforts to improve teaching and learning activities with the launch of a three-day capacity-building programme focused on digital pedagogy and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for secondary school teachers across the state.
The training, organised by the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), brings together selected teachers from the six education districts and the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB), underscoring the state’s commitment to integrating technology into education.
Declaring the workshop open at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Hall, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Tolani Alli-Balogun, described the initiative as timely, noting that Nigeria’s education sector is at a critical juncture driven by rapid technological advancement.
He urged participants to embrace digital pedagogy, artificial intelligence, and problem-solving skills in their teaching methods, while stressing the need for continuous professional development to remain relevant in a constantly evolving education landscape.
“All educators must stay updated on emerging teaching strategies and best practices to create learning environments that foster creativity, productivity, and respect,” he said.
He added that the initiative aligns with Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda, particularly its focus on Education and Technology.
Alli-Balogun also commended the governor for his sustained investment in teacher’s development, noting that such programmes are critical to strengthening the capacity of educators and enhancing effective classroom delivery across all levels.
In her welcome address, chairman of TESCOM, Mrs. Victoria Mopelola Peregrino, stated that digital pedagogy goes beyond the use of devices, describing it as a paradigm shift from traditional teacher-centred instruction to learner-centred engagement.
She said the training is designed to stimulate creative thinking among teachers and encourage the adoption of innovative teaching approaches that will drive the achievement of the Education and Technology pillar of the state’s development agenda.
