Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested an 18-year-old suspect while attempting to collect a N20 million ransom in a sting operation.

The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, disclosed this on Tuesday during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Ikeja.

Tijani said the arrest followed a complaint by officials of the Ojokoro Local Council Development Area over threats to life and a demand for ransom.

He explained that acting on the report, operatives swiftly launched an intelligence-led operation that led to the suspect’s arrest on March 27 at the point of collecting the ransom.

“The suspect was apprehended during a sting operation while attempting to collect the N20 million ransom,” the police boss said.

Items recovered from him include an HP laptop and a flash drive, which are currently undergoing forensic analysis as part of ongoing investigations.

According to Tijani, preliminary findings revealed that the suspect confessed to the crime and also admitted involvement in an earlier attempted burglary at a commercial bank.

He added that the command had intensified efforts to tackle rising cases of kidnapping, extortion and other violent crimes across the state.

The police commissioner further disclosed that investigations were ongoing to identify other possible accomplices and unravel the full extent of the suspect’s activities.

He assured that the suspect would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.

Tijani reiterated the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, warning criminal elements to desist from unlawful activities or face the full weight of the law.
