Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) weekend reiterated its commitment to strengthening a transparent and mutually beneficial relationship with the media, while urging caution against the spread of unverified, misleading, or defamatory reports that could undermine public trust in government institutions.

The general manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, stated this following the conclusion of an internal investigative panel set up to review claims published by an online platform alleging that operatives of the authority extorted N100,000 from commercial bus drivers along the Coastal Road corridor in Lagos.

He said the panel’s investigation clearly showed that the vehicles involved were lawfully apprehended for obstructing traffic, in violation of existing traffic regulations. He added that all fines imposed were duly paid into government accounts, with verifiable receipts presented by the affected drivers during the review process. The findings, he noted, effectively dismissed the allegations of extortion.

Bakare-Oki stated the importance of the media in promoting public awareness, encouraging compliance with traffic laws, and supporting civic responsibility. He described the press as a key partner in fostering informed public dialogue and sustaining democratic governance.

However, he said this responsibility must be carried out with professionalism, accuracy and strict adherence to journalistic ethics.

While acknowledging the role of constructive criticism, he warned that publishing unverified claims or sensational stories could damage institutional reputation and weaken public confidence.
