The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has launched its Sustainable Empowerment Programme in Kano State, targeting over 2,000 households with clean energy solutions aimed at improving livelihoods and reducing the impact of climate change.

The initiative, flagged off at Fabs Event Centre, Kano, on April 28, 2026, saw beneficiaries receive NASENI clean cookstoves, solar home systems, and other energy tools designed to expand access to reliable and affordable power, particularly in rural and semi-urban communities.

Flagging off the programme, the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, described the initiative as a practical demonstration of how Nigeria’s industrial, trade, and investment agenda is being translated into measurable outcomes for citizens. She noted that the programme aligns with the Federal Government’s broader push for industrialisation, job creation, and inclusive economic growth under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Oduwole commended NASENI’s leadership for driving an intervention that supports local productivity while also addressing environmental concerns. She added that Kano’s selection reflects its long-standing role as a major commercial and manufacturing hub in West Africa, with strengths in trade, textiles, agro-processing, and enterprise.

In his remarks, NASENI Executive Vice Chairman, Mr Khalil Suleiman Halilu, said the programme goes beyond basic support, positioning it as part of a wider national effort to build a cleaner and healthier Nigeria. According to him, the deployment of clean cookstoves will help reduce smoke exposure and fuel costs, while solar home systems will provide dependable electricity for homes and small businesses.

“What you are receiving today is not just support; it is part of a larger national effort to build a cleaner and healthier Nigeria,” Halilu said. “This programme is not just empowerment. It is about dignity. It is about improving your quality of life. It is about giving you tools to do more, earn more, and live better.”

He urged beneficiaries to make proper use of the equipment, noting that the tools are intended to support household needs, strengthen small businesses, and improve long-term economic outcomes.

Goodwill messages were delivered by key stakeholders, including Chairman of the Presidential Implementation Committee on Technology Transfer (PICTT), Dr Mohammed Dahiru; Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Chris Isokpunwu; National Coordinator of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Mrs Patience Okala; and the Head of Service of Kano State, Alhaji Salisu Mustapha, who represented the state government.

Nigeria Startup News reports that the NASENI Sustainable Empowerment Programme is expected to serve as a model for similar interventions across other states, as the agency continues to expand access to clean energy solutions nationwide.
