The Deputy President of the Senate, Jibrin Barau, Thursday lauded Nigeria’s crucial role in advancing economic development, democratic governance and peace mediation across West Africa.

He stated this at Voice of Nigeria (VON) Forum 2026 with the theme; “51 Years of Nigeria’s Role in Deepening  Democratic Stability in ECOWAS.”

Barau noted that Nigeria’s efforts in promoting credible elections, upholding the rule of law and ensuring transparency in parliamentary processes have strengthened democratic institutions.

He said Nigeria’s leadership extends beyond governance, encompassing economic development, regional cooperation, and peace-building initiatives.

“Through collaborative efforts with other West African nations, Nigeria has contributed significantly to sustaining democracy, promoting credible elections and ensuring respect for human rights across the sub-region,” he added.

He added that Nigerian parliamentarians have actively engaged with counterparts across the region to maintain peace and stability.

“Nigeria’s leadership role in West African peace initiatives remains significant,” he said.

He also commended institutions such as the Voice of Nigeria for their role projecting the nation’s achievements and fostering unity.

“This VON forum continues to serve as a lifeline in shaping West Africa and demonstrating to the world that Nigeria remains one united and resilient nation,” he added.

He concluded by reaffirming that Nigeria remains strong, united, and committed to its role as a regional leader, leveraging its institutions, parliamentary processes, and media platforms to influence positive change across West Africa.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris,  said from peace-keeping missions to mediation efforts, and supporting democratic transitions to strengthening regional institutions, Nigeria has consistently demonstrated leadership and commitment to the stability and progress of the sub-region.

“These contributions reflect a clear principle: Nigeria’s stability and progress are closely tied to West Africa’s stability,” he said.

He said a peaceful and democratic region creates opportunities for growth, investment and shared prosperity.
